THE WAY IN
After years of periodically recording solo piano improvisations, two of which I released myself, I am pleased to have this recording, The Way In, released by 482 Music. As I write in the liner notes, solo playing is the most vulnerable and intimate setting for improvising, yet profoundly rewarding. This particular session was recorded at Harvard in a dormitory study hall converted into a recording studio. It’s an important step to take as a pianist and I’m very glad to be able to share it with you.

THE YEAR IN GIGS
As I approach the end of my 2nd year in Rome, I’m starting to feel like this is home. With a vibrant jazz scene here and in Europe, I’m looking forward to more exciting musical collaborations. This past year, I’ve had the good fortune to work with some great musicians and to be involved in some interesting projects. In the fall, I collaborated with trombonist Frank Lacy, Henry Cook, and the great English saxophonists Peter King and Julien Arguelies.

This spring I had the opportunity to play with fellow Detroiter Rick Margitza and the amazing George Garzone (one of those nights, Dave Liebman and Adam Nussbaum came to the club and joined us). My trio also toured throughout Italy. In Ireland I was fortunate to be part of a project that brought together traditional music, including sean-nos singing and musicians, with the quartet of Michael Buckley.

This summer I will play in duos with John Tchicai and Roberto Gatto. I will also celebrate the release of my solo CD at the Cremona Jazz Project. My trio will play around Italy and be joined by George Garzone as well. I will also play solo piano on Radio RAI 3 in a live broadcast.

TEACHING/SEMINARS
This summer I will be teaching and helping to organize the first edition of the Jazz Workshop of Santa Marinella (June 26-July 1), a beautiful seaside resort north of Rome. I will also be teaching piano and World Music Ear Training at the Sligo Jazz Project (Aug. 9-13) in Ireland and the Tuscany International Jazz Summer School and Arts Festivala in Certaldo, Italy (Aug 21-26).
